How Can I Create a Table of Contents?

In Ulysses, you can create a table of contents for all export formats, for example, PDF, DOCX and ePub, as well as for your blog posts.

To add a table of contents placeholder, type the tag (toc) on a separate line in the editor. Alternatively, you can select the tag from the Markup menu (Mac) or the Markup bar above the keyboard (iPad/iPhone). For this to work, please make sure that Ulysses's own markup, called Markdown XL, is selected.

While you only see the placeholder in the editor, Ulysses will create a full table of contents that lists the headings below the placeholder during export.

By default, the first two heading levels (# and ##) will be displayed in the table of contents. However, when exporting to PDF, DOCX or ePub, you can set which heading levels should be included. To do so, open the export preview and click on the export style at the top:

Then click the popup button next to Table of Contents and select an option:

On the iPad and iPhone, tap the brush icon in the export preview to change this setting:

Please note: When you open an exported DOCX file in Microsoft Word, you will be asked if you want to update the fields in the document. If you select Yes, Word automatically generates the correct page numbers. Then, choose any update option and press OK.
