Apple Intelligence is Apple’s built‑in AI system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It powers features such as Writing Tools and Siri AI, both of which are available in Ulysses.

Apple Intelligence is available in Australian, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand, South African, British and American English, as well as French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified), and English for Singapore and India in most regions worldwide. Writing Tools 

Writing Tools are designed to help you proofread, rewrite, and summarize text. 

On Mac, just select your text, hover the pointer over the selection, and click the “Writing Tools” icon or select the icon in Ulysses' toolbar. On iOS, select your text and tap the “Writing Tools” icon in the context menu.

On Mac and iPad, a popover appears with several options.

On iPhone, you’ll see a dedicated view that replaces the keyboard for quick access.

Next, choose an action. Writing Tools will then analyze your text and offer a suggested replacement.

To update the text in Ulysses, simply click “Replace.” This will retain all markup and text elements, including links, footnotes, images, and more while ignoring code blocks and tables.

You can also compose text with the help of ChatGPT by selecting the “Compose” option.

To use this feature, you will be prompted to enable the ChatGPT extension on the first use.

If prefer not to use Writing Tools in Ulysses, you can disable it here:

• Mac: Go to the “Edit” menu › “Writing Tools” › uncheck “Enable Writing Tools.”
• iOS: Open “Editor Settings,” then go to “Substitutions” › uncheck “Enable Writing Tools.”

Requirements

Writing Tools is available on iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 for newer devices:

• Mac: Any device with an M1 or later.
• iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 or newer.
• iPad: all iPads with an M1 chip and the 2024 iPad mini.

Siri AI 

Siri AI is Apple’s rebuilt, AI‑powered version of Siri, introduced as part of Apple Intelligence. Rather than relying on simple voice commands, it acts as a conversational assistant that understands your personal context and can see what’s on your screen.

To use Siri AI in Ulysses, you must first enable Siri in System Settings. After enabling it and relaunching Ulysses, an “Ask Siri” option will appear in the context menu throughout the app. Simply right‑click or touch and hold a sheet, group, project, section title, or selected text in the editor, choose “Ask Siri,” and enter your prompt. 

Of course, you can still activate Siri using voice commands like “Hey Siri” if enabled.

Please note that Siri AI’s integration with Ulysses is still limited and that we cannot add further actions ourselves because the set of possible interactions is predefined by Apple. Currently, you can use Siri AI in Ulysses to:

• Create new sheets
• Move sheets
• Mark sheets as Favorites
• Export sheets and groups as PDF, RTF, Markdown, ULYZ, or HTML
• Start a search within Ulysses
• Open a sheet
• Read sheets 
• Get an overview of existing groups
• Interact with text in the editor (proofreading, summarizing, etc.)

Requirements and Restrictions

Siri AI is available on the following devices running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27:

• Mac with M1 or later, and MacBook Neo (A18 Pro)
• iPad models with M1 or later, and iPad mini (A17 Pro)
• iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later

There are a few restrictions that you should be aware of:

• Siri AI is only available for users with a supported device set to English.
• Users in the EU can access Siri AI on Mac when set to English. However, Siri AI is currently not available in the EU on iOS and iPadOS devices.
• Siri AI is currently not available in China.

Privacy

Apple aims to process AI features on-device, though occasionally, tasks may be sent to their “Private Cloud Compute”. For more information on this, please refer to this Apple article:
